WORKER MEMORIAL DAY RALLY

NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO DIE TO MAKE A LIVING!

Join the Mississippi Workers’ Center for Human Rights, workers and their families, labor activists, religious leaders, community organizers, students, elected officials and other concerned citizens on Saturday, April 22nd, 2006 at 11:00AM on the steps of the State Capitol in Jackson, MS as we celebrate Worker Memorial Day.

Worker Memorial Day (April 28th) is a day set aside to commemorate the lives of workers who died as a result of unsafe working conditions.

Every year thousands of workers are killed or injured on the job. According to the most recent report issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2003, 5559 workers died as a result of workplace hazards and thousands more have been injured and in many cases, permanently disabled. In Mississippi, at least 100 workers died of occupational hazards in 2003.

In the state of Mississippi, workers who are injured on the job, are only provided 450 weeks of benefits under the state’s current Workers Compensation law. To change this law and provide more coverage for injured Mississippi workers, the Workers’ Center has launched a petition drive calling upon the Governor to establish a task force to study the current law and to consider expanding the coverage currently provided.

Help the Center reach its goal of obtaining 2000 signatures by clicking on the link below, print out a copy of the petition and pass around to colleagues, co-workers, family and friends.
